The paintings in this section are mostly small, 'plein air' landscape studies, i.e. rapid sketches completed out of doors in a single session. Whilst such studies (often referred to as 'pochades') can serve as the basis for larger, more considered studio paintings (in both oils and watercolours) they may nonetheless also be regarded as finished paintings in their own right. By working rapidly on a small scale, the entire scene can be captured in a single session. Moreover, by placing oneself physically within the landscape all of the senses are allowed to be brought into play, thereby heightening one's perception of, and emotional response to, what is being recorded.
